Middletown, PA: Two retailers were recently approved as members by Furniture First’s board of directors GDC Home in Charleston, South Carolina, and Northpoint Furniture in Durango, Colorado.
Founded in 1978, GDC Home has three locations in the Charleston, SC area. Named by a regional magazine as a “go-to” spot for home design, GDC Home’s merchandising team travels domestically internationally to directly import textiles and unique specialty items. This allows them to create eclectic, curated spaces for their design customers.
Harry Gregorie, the owner of GDC Home, took over the business from his mother, Jane Gregorie, in 1992. The company’s name is in homage to an ancestor, who immigrated from Scottland in 1770 and founded a dry goods company with a partner in 1781. That company was named “Gregorie, Douglas, and Co.”
Northpoint Furniture and Mattress opening their doors in 1977. Known for carrying top brands, Northpoint specializes in custom order merchandise with in-home design services. A family-owned store, Northpoint is currently operated by Bill Hermesman.
“Both of these new members came to us through referrals,” said Andrew Kauffman, CEO of Furniture First. “One of them had never been in a buying group before,. but when he learned from two members of his performance group the savin Even though these newest members are in different parts of the country, with different retail strategies and merchandise mixes, they both will find great benefits from membership. We are not a ‘one-size-fits-all organization.’ We intentionally build in flexibility to fit a variety of retail strategies, as long as they sell new residential furniture and mattresses. We try to help independent retailers stay independent, and that includes building a strong foundation for ownership succession.”
Furniture First is a cooperative national home furnishings and mattress buying group serving full line independent retailers with sales over $2 million. Collectively, the group sells $3 billion at retail with their approved merchandise programs in the 537 member storefronts.
